Description
This trip to southern Italy is designed for Latin students who are interested in exploring the ancient sites studied in the series of Latin classes we offer. We consider this a field study experience for our Latin students, focusing on sites in Rome for the first part of the trip and then traveling south to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, Mr. Vesuvius, Capri, and Naples. The trip will span approximately 12-14 days, with a targeted departure of Sunday, March 25th pending flight arrangements once the group is selected.
We expect that this trip will cost each student approximately $4,100 (at the current rate of Euro exchange, cost of fuel and surcharges, all of which will fluctuate a lot between now and the time we leave), including all travel, hotel, and food expenses. Once the participants are selected they will have a week to accept their place on the trip. On November 1st, student accounts will be charged a non-refundable $1,500 deposit to cover flight and hotel reservations.
Unfortunately, space is limited. Selecting the students for this trip is extremely difficult. Therefore, we ask each applicant to fill out the application form (attached) thoughtfully. The deadline for the application is Friday, September 28, 2018. Please turn it in to Kelli, Neal or Sarah M. Prior to the application due date, parents and students can direct any questions to group leaders. A parent information night will be scheduled for the selected participants at a later date.
Participants must attend F-Day Club meetings
Dates and Times of this project may change due to flight availability.
Ancient Field Studies tour is scheduled for our Latin students during Project Week and Spring Break.
In order for students to get the most out of this experience the following expectations must be met:
- Attendance: participants must attend F-Day Club meetings starting to learn basic Italian, to orient themselves to the sites and the city of Rome, and research the specific ruins and museums we will be visiting. These meetings will take place in the Villa (South Annex).
- Commitment: personal responsibility and commitment to the group are vital to the success of this adventure. We will be assessing each student’s level of interest and long-term involvement for suitability for such a serious undertaking. We reserve the right to make changes in participants based on our judgment of student responsibility.
- Preparation: thorough preparation of personal documents/materials for travel, learning Italian, researching sites, working cooperatively, respectfully, and supportively with others, and meeting all deadlines and commitments reflect student responsibility.
The School’s goal is to ensure that students have greater access to the full array of co-curricular opportunities available. Financial aid is available for Project Week trips costing more than $900. For more information contact Lou Sabino, director of admission & financial aid, at lsabino@overlake.org.
