Keeper of the Lost Cities Escape Room

Students using a blacklight on a puzzle

The Keeper of the Lost Cities is a popular fantasy series by Shannon Messenger, so I decided to create an escape room around that theme. The room included several puzzles that students had to solve to open a series of five boxes, with number locks, word locks, color locks, and key locks. Along the way they had to translate Morse Code, taste test "mallowmelt" cookies, solve a poem leading to a series of numbers, listen to a song and recreate the notes on a xylophone, use the main character's "runes homework" to solve a decoder wheel, use "ruckleberries" (i.e. water squirty toys) to "purify" a key frozen into baking soda, and piece together a puzzle with a blacklight clue on it. Though the kids did need a lot of hints, especially since some hadn't read the books(!), everyone escaped and earned cookies! See more photos here.
