The Project Week trip to China is an international experience in line with the goals of the World Language department at Overlake.  We will visit sites of significant cultural importance in Beijing and Shanghai before partaking in a brief homestay in Limei’s hometown Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province.

The students will have a chance to experience Beijing’s rich culture and history through visiting famous sites such as the forbidden city, the temple of heaven, the great wall, etc.  Afterwards, they will spend two days visiting China’s financial center and the representative of modern Chinese culture, Shanghai. At the final destination, Zhenjiang, they will spend one day experience classrooms in a Chinese high school then go home with their hosting students to spend the weekend.

The purpose of this project is to:

  • Provide students with opportunities for educational and cultural exchanges through meaningful interaction with local host families and institutions.
  • Expose students to the rich cultural heritage and vibrant present identity of China and its people through in-depth exploration of historical sites, art collections and/or current festivals.
  • Offer students an opportunity to learn about themselves as a young traveler by encouraging them to step outside their comfort zone.
  • Enhance students’ ability to effectively communicate in Mandarin by building significant relationships with their host partners.
  • Encourage students to become willing and caring global citizens by learning first-hand what it means to be a gracious guest and cultural ambassador.
