In conjunction with the Center for Wooden Boats, we will be living, learning and exploring at Cama Beach State Park on Camano Island. This Project Week has something for everyone: Boat building, whale watching, beach combing, boating techniques including motorboat handling and kayaks, learning about the biology of Puget Sound and being a part of ‘Cama Beach Survivor’ where students will learn 18th century survival techniques that would replicate the challenges of being stranded on Cama Beach at that time. Students will be staying in small heated cabins on the beach and preparing all meals during the week.

Educational Objectives

Students will develop teamwork skills with a specific concrete goal – building a boat. On the same project, students will grow individually as they learn boating techniques, the biology of Puget Sound, as well as basic survival techniques in the Northwest. Students will be taking care of themselves and others through meal planning, cooking and cleaning. Students will be required to keep a journal of their experiences and each team of 6 students will create a presentation to show their boatbuilding/sailing skills.
