Combine art and engineering to make something awesome! We’ll be spending four days at a community makerspace on Capitol Hill, where we’ll have access to a laser for cutting and etching. You will gain hands-on experience with cutting edge, professional grade rapid prototyping and fabrication equipment. This is your chance to make anything you can dream up! Come up with ideas, prototype your ideas, test your ideas, and then improve them to make an even better product. You will have a chance to present your finished projects to the Overlake community at the end of Project Week.

Note: For this project, you will need a functioning laptop (tablets running the full version of Windows like Surface Pros will work, but iOS, Android, and Windows RT devices will not be sufficient). Since we will be doing a fair bit of computer graphic design a mouse may be helpful. The project cost includes light snacks and drinks, but not lunch. You will need to bring your own lunch or bring money to buy lunch on Monday through Thursday, and bring your own lunch Friday. In order to maximize the time we will have working with the equipment and to ensure safety, there will be several training sessions during lunch in the time leading to Project Week. They will be scheduled once the roster is finalized.

Special Considerations

We would like a diverse spread of students from grade levels, backgrounds, and a gender-balanced group. We'll need to make sure that the students who do this project are responsible and focused since we'll be working with expensive and potentially dangerous equipment.

Students will need a laptop running Windows (not RT) or Mac OS X.

Students will need to bring their own lunch or money for lunch Monday through Thursday, and bring their own lunch Friday. List of lunch options on Capitol Hill will be made available to students prior to Project Week.
