Singing-Songwriting Workshop

Grades

12

What are some standard song structures? How do we find inspiration for lyrics? How do different instruments and voicings evoke mood and tone? How do different styles of lyrical delivery and instrument timbre affect the musical product? Students will listen to and analyze an array of artists, read lyrics and articles by songwriters on the creative process, and analyze the work of an artist of their choosing. Additionally, they will write and perform one song at a final concert. Students will also co-write a final number to be performed by all members of the project. The final performance could be streamed live on the internet. All genres of music are welcome, including jazz, electronic, acoustic, hip-hop, etc.

Special Considerations
  • Required: Students should be positive and supportive of themselves and others.
  • The ability to play an instrument with some degree of competency (not limited to just guitar and piano).
  • Students will need to provide their own instrument.
  • Complete all given assignments: One song analysis, one original song, and contributions to the group song.
  • Full participation in the final concert.
