This is your chance to create your very own children’s picture book—from start to finish. Through a series of 45-minute lessons, your instructors will guide you as you write your own story, illustrate key scenes, and compile your work in a hand-bound book to take home. Along the way, you will learn more about story structure, the writing process, illustration techniques, compilation of a book, editing stories and illustrations for other writers, and team work. For this fantastic project, Ms. Moore and Ms. Mihata have customized the lessons detailed in David Melton’s book Written and Illustrated by….: A Revolutionary Two-Brain Approach for Teaching Students How to Write and Illustrate Amazing Books.

Special Considerations

To receive credit for Project Week, students must complete their books. Also, they must attend all sessions on all five days. Attendance is vital because missing part or all of a day means missing instruction sessions, without which students will not be able to complete their books.

The following costs will be covered by Project Week fees: standard drawing paper, standard printer paper, bookbinding supplies, daily snacks, pizza lunch on Wednesday.

*Additional Cost: Because students choose their own media for the illustrations, this cost will not be covered by the Project Week fee. Instead, for their illustrations, students must provide their own media (watercolors, ink, markers, colored pencils, illustration software and peripherals, specialized paper, etc.) and bring them to the project the first day.
