How to Apply For An Extended Education Project Week in Upper School

Follow this link then click “Enroll in Course.”  Next follow the directions in the course to complete applications. Applications are due by Sept 16th.

Description

The Project Week trip to Spain is part of our nearly 20 year relationship between the Overlake School and Lux Mundi, our sister school in Spain.  Lux Mundi is located in Granada, the ancient Moorish capital of Andalucía.  From there, we embark on our exploration and study of Spain through extended homestays and cultural visits.

The majority of our time is spent interacting with our Spanish peers. We will visit many cultural sites as a group.  Apart from our time in Granada, we will make excursions to other important cities, such as Sevilla and Córdoba, from where the history of Spain’s many peoples can be traced.

In addition to our time spent in Andalucía, we will experience the vibrant, charming capital of Madrid, where history blends with modernity to create a unique urban landscape.  Students will appreciate the chance to see a bustling, yet tranquil and safe European capital.

The purpose of this project is to:

  • provide students with opportunities for educational and cultural exchanges through meaningful interaction with local host families and institutions.
  • expose students to the rich cultural heritage and vibrant present identity of Spain and its people through in-depth exploration of historical sites, art collections and current festivals.
  • offer students an opportunity to learn about themselves as a young traveler by encouraging them to step outside their comfort zone.
  • enhance students’ ability to effectively communicate in Spanish by building significant relationships with their host partners.
  • encourage students to become willing and caring global citizens by learning first-hand what it means to be a gracious guest and cultural ambassador.
Special Considerations

It is important to note that the opportunity to live with another family is a unique experience, especially in the hospitable Spainish culture.  Being a guest in Spain is a privileged position, and most everyone will do their best to accommodate you.  However, certain privileges come with responsibilities.

It is our belief that those who wish to partake in this Project Week trip should be excited to engage with the local culture while abroad, and be equally enthusiastic to host a Spanish student during their vist to Overlake.  This is a vital component of our exchange agreement with Lux Mundi, and also serves to complete the lessons learned abroad.  Please let us know that you will be willing to host at the time of application.

This trip is limited to students currently studying Spanish or those who have a background in the Spanish language.  Priority is given to grades 11 and 12, and students at the more advanced levels of Spanish study but all Upper School Spanish students are encouraged to apply.

As this is an Extended Education project, students must attend 5 orientation sessions prior to Project Week that take place during upper school lunches.

*Please note that itinerary is still to be determined but will take place over approximately 13 days within this time period.
