This project takes a closer look at the housing crisis facing the Seattle and King County metro area. The goal is for students to learn about ways they can engage in service to provide for the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness as well as what steps they can take in their own communities to help provide housing. Two of the days will be spent engaging in service work, including working at local food banks and serving hot meals, and two days will be spent meeting with a diverse group of community leaders such as local government agencies, activist groups centered on housing justice, groups providing legal assistance to fight eviction, and others. The week will culminate with students crafting a final project that in some way addresses the housing crisis (it could be service-oriented, or more activist, such as raising awareness about laws/housing policies in their own communities).

Special Considerations

Students will receive some service hours as determined by the leaders (not to exceed 15 hours).

Students will be on their feet frequently, engaging in a variety of service projects and activities both on the Eastside and in Seattle.

Participants must be willing to follow COVID guidelines.  Participants should only attend illness free. If a participant should test positive for COVID during the project, the student will be isolated, and the student’s family will be required to pick them up at their current location.  The family will bear all the costs associated with the student pick up.

By selecting the above project, you and your family are accepting the financial responsibility for the cost of the projects.  This includes any unrecoverable expenses incurred if Overlake, or any federal, state or local government forces cancelation of the project, or if you or your family decide not to attend, or if your student becomes symptomatic and has to be isolated.
