Sign Up for a New Adventure This Summer
Students who come to Overlake during the summer are encouraged to try something new. This whole idea of exploration without concern for tests and grades is appealing.
“We have a robust mix of interdisciplinary camps,” explains Overlake’s Summer Program Director, Nate Edmunds. “We encourage students to explore that variety, pursuing topics that they already love and trying new ones that expand their horizons. Many of our campers seek new learning experiences to get outside of their comfort zones.”
And the faculty are no different in their attitudes of trying new things. Take for example visual arts teacher, Dana Len. She’s spending a good portion of her summer at Overlake teaching a variety of camps. “This type of work is exciting to me, even if it means giving up part of my summer. Beyond it being just teaching a week-long camp, the program has provided strong coaching for the faculty and has really provided a sort of “test kitchen” for us to create and design meaningful curriculum that will extend into all the classes we teach,” explains Len.
Some faculty are even trying new disciplines this summer. “Many of our teachers offer camps outside of their traditional teaching disciplines to share their passions with the students and find ways to grow as educators,” explains Edmunds. “This year, we have a physical education teacher leading an engineering camp and a science teacher facilitating the cooking camp. We hope our students follow in their footsteps by pursuing a wide range of interests.”
