Let's Fill the Gym for This Year's Coaches vs. Cancer Games
Now is the time to pick out your finest pink clothes for this year’s Coaches versus Cancer games on Friday, January 26.
The annual fundraiser is a hit during our basketball season, and this year is expected to the biggest event yet. “It’s going to be so fun to pack the house,” says Athletic Director John Wiley. “We were more intentional on who we invited this year. Bear Creek is our neighbor and rival so we know they’ll bring their community here.”
With both schools putting competitive programs on the court, Wiley says the games will have extra special meaning as they compete for league standings.
Girls’ Basketball player Holly H. (’18) says this is the game for fans to support the Owls. “Every year the team looks forward to Coaches versus Cancer because it’s so much more than basketball,” says the senior co-captain. “Seeing that fan spirit and the entire crowd wearing pink really motivates us.”
This year, proceeds benefit CLiMB (Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery) which is a support program for children whose parents are diagnosed with cancer. Wiley adds that the event is a success every year due to the active participation of parents in Overlake’s Athletic Club (OAC). “You need people who are motivated to make it happen, and our OAC parents own it. Outside of me reading some raffle numbers and handing out prizes, the parents do all the important work.”
In addition to some great basketball action, there will be a taco truck, game break competitions, raffles, a silent auction, and live music.
