Overlake's Youngest Athletes Begin Practices
For most middle school students, the balance between academics, social life, and extra-curricular activities may, at times, feel a bit overwhelming in the first weeks of school.
That is why Middle School Athletic Director Mike Fine wants parents to know that the Overlake experience isn’t about wins and losses, but, rather, the camaraderie they share on the courts and fields. “For a lot of these kids, it’s the first time they’re on a team. Failure is o.k. but at least you should try it,” says Fine.
He says that Overlake’s MS sports success is attributed to having teams with different caliber players. “We get kids that come here from club teams and have lots of skills, but I love to see that student who has never stepped on to a volleyball court and succeed.” Athletes are going through assessments this week and will be placed on teams where they can get a lot of playing time.
Fine has talked to his coaches about their expectations. Many coaches are new to our program so he makes no secret about his goal. “We definitely want to build skills, but we want our coaches to do it in a fun way,” says Fine. “When the kids get done with the season and say ‘Wow that was a fun experience’ then that’s the win.”
