MathCounts Competition

Math counts

Last week, Middle School math faculty 'becca Flora led 15 MS students to the MathCounts competition. Typically this competition is held on the Microsoft campus with over 300 participants from local schools, but this year is was held virtually. Since there is a 15-student limit on participants Flora has to select which students are able to compete by holding a school competition. Once selected, students prepared both individually at home and with others at math club. This year there were several practice quizzes and online resources to help students prepare to compete

Although online competition has challenges, Flora appreciated that students could better compete in ways that suited their learning styles. For example, students could read questions out loud to themselves or fidget and be as noisy as they needed to be during competition and not disturb others as they worked.

In a typical year there would be both individual and team components to the competition, but due to the remote nature of this year’s competition, there was no team portion. After the competition, the top scorer from each school plus the top 20% scorers overall advance to the next round with the potential to go all the way to a national competition. This year, Jadyn L. (’26) was invited to the next invitational round and will find out soon if she will advance to the state competition.
