Speech and Debate Needs You

The Overlake speech and debate team has had a very successful first half of the season, just wrapping up the fall season at the Bellevue School District Invitational a couple weekends ago.

Through the team practices over online platforms on the weekdays, and occasional tournaments on the weekends, the team has had time for both learning and bonding over the months. They have competed in five tournaments this year and have received 86 awards, including many first places, with students in grades 9 -12 placing. 13 students have also received a total of 48 state bids, and many are well on their way to qualify for state across 8 different categories.

With the first half of the season just wrapping up, the students are taking a break and preparing for the spring season, researching new topics and refining speeches. The second half of the debate season begins with a very busy January, full of tournaments providing opportunities to acquire state tournament bids and a few offering opportunities to acquire national tournament bids.

Not only does winter break give a great opportunity for current members of the team to take a break, but it also gives the team an opportunity to welcome new members. The team would love to have more people join!
