Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl is new on the Overlake scene this year and reimagined for 2020. The Quiz Bowl club took fifth place in their first tournament this week competing with 7 other schools both local and national.
Quiz Bowl is a fast paced buzzer-style trivia game where groups of four students buzz in and answer questions about academic subjects, pop culture, or current events. Players are scored individually and as a team. This year only one student had previous Quiz Bowl experience and freshman Aryav T. (’23) posted the highest individual score in the whole tournament!
Aryav had previous experience with Quiz Bowl and decided to start the team this year as a club. And since she loves trivia, Librarian Kelly Vikstrom-Hoyt jumped at the chance to be the faculty advisor.
“I was a member of the Charles Wright Knowledge Bowl team (not quiz bowl, but very similar) back in ye olden days,” said Vikstrom-Hoyt.
The competitions have adapted to the limitations of 2020 and are held on Discord. Students “buzzed” into the chat and were asked to show one hand on camera, if possible, to show they were staying honest.
Quiz Bowl club is still a young club, but they are looking ahead and considering other competitions to join in the future. One thing Vikstrom-Hoyt pointed out is that because competitions are held virtually right now, they have the opportunity to join tournaments across the country. Quiz Bowl is open to all interested Upper School students.
