5th Avenue Awards Honors The Music Man
This year’s all-school musical The Music Man was a huge success. This week, Washington’s foremost theater judging panel also recognized the Overlake production.
Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre Award nominees were named this week, and Overlake was named in three categories.
Receiving Honorable Mentions in Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Costume Design categories, Overlake’s theater department faced tough competition from 119 productions across Washington.
“The Music Man was a true Overlake community event, including students, faculty, staff, and even an alum on stage,” says Arts Chair, Erin Gabriel. “Not only was it a lot of hard work and a lot of fun, there was quite a bit of learning going on. Everyone I talk to says it was an experience they’ll never forget!”
Now in its 16th year, the 5th Avenue Awards are judged by evaluators who travel across the state in search of the finest young musical talent. This year, Overlake student Kate M. (’18) is being recognized by 5th Avenue Theatre for Student Achievement.
Winners will be announced on June 11 in an awards show that is similar in style to the Tony Awards. “We love this event because it’s such a celebration of youth theater,” adds Gabriel. And to further Overlake's connection to the theater, senior Maddie H. has been helping behind the scenes. She's been promoting the awards show on the theater's social media accounts as a 5th Avenue Theatre intern.
