While watching an Overlake Soccer practice, it might be hard to differentiate Coach Scott Lane from his players.  Lane seizes every opportunity to teach by example.   He takes part in drills and leads by doing. A longtime assistant, Lane was named head coach when Bob Bristol announced his retirement at the end of last season’s state championship run. It’s easy to see he’s made a strong connection with his squad, and inspires them to work hard.

“Having a new coach adds to the competitiveness of the game because everybody is fighting for spots with a fresh set of eyes looking at them,” says Lane. “I love what I’m seeing as they’re playing with a lot of intensity and heart.”

Tuesday, the Overlake soccer team played their first game against non-conference Toledo. Finishing in a 0-0 draw, Lane was able to access the talent on his roster that includes four freshmen. “We’d obviously liked to win, but I was impressed that we didn’t give up any goals, had lots of chances, and really tested their back line and keeper,” says Lane.

The coaching staff named three senior captains with Kirby W., Nate S., and Luke B. for displaying and modeling leadership both on and off the field. That combination of freshman and seniors is makes practices feel more competitive. “We’re still getting used to playing with each other,” says Lane. “The freshmen are really pushing our upperclassmen, and it’s lighting a fire on our team that makes us more competitive in everything we do.”

Lane’s squad has two opportunities this week the obtain their first victory. They’ll play a league game against Eastside Prep on Thursday, and on Saturday, the team travels to Wahluke for a rematch of last year’s state championship game in which Overlake won. Lane is optimistic about their chances for success. “I don’t see it taking too long with this team. If we continue to grow together, I think it’s going to be a great year,” says Lane.
