Owls Name New Basketball Coach

The foundation of Owls Girls’ Basketball is set, but there’s a new courtside leader.

Courtney Hellem was named Head Coach just days before practice opened this week. A longtime assistant, Hellem takes the job after last year’s Emerald City League Coach of the Year Rachel Yusko resigned for personal reasons.

For Hellem, the opportunity to lead the Owls was perfect timing. “I’ve known these girls for years,” says Hellem. “I’m fortunate to move into a position where I helped develop a lot of these players.”

This year’s Owls are expected to make a run for the Emerald City League title.

Last year’s team had low turnout, and this year is no different. However, this team has a lot of experience. Hellem has named Amanda L. ’18 and Holly H. ’18 as captains. Hellem says all those minutes played last year transfer into leadership.

Asked if the Owls style will be an aggressive pressing squad or more of a set up zone with returning post player Eliza F. ’20 anchoring the middle, Hellem replies, “All of the above. Our guards can push the ball, we can press on defense, and still feed the post. It’s a great mix of young talent and experienced leaders on this team.”

Depth will be an issue for the Owls as they only have nine players on the varsity roster. “It’s a team sport, and it’s up to me to find way for everyone to contribute on the court,” says Hellem.

The Owls open their season on November 28 at home versus Concrete. Make plans now to come out and support Owls Basketball!
