December construction update

student & community center

We are thrilled to share this latest video, featuring our incredible faculty and staff, that beautifully captures the vision for the Student & Community Center. It’s an inspiring glimpse into how this space will serve our students, faculty, and community, and we hope you’ll be as excited as we are about its potential.

Thank you to all our donors for your wonderful support, and to donors Pia and Akira Matsuno (Miyako ’29) for sharing this equally inspiring quote: “Within the walls of a school community hall, dreams take flight, talents ignite, and the future unfolds. We believe in the impact Overlake has on our children and are delighted to support the development of our new Student & Community Center.”

We look forward to sharing more updates about the Center in the future, inviting our community’s participation as we wrap up the capital campaign this year, as well as scheduling hard hat tours in 2025. There is indeed much to be excited about!

Construction fun facts

Construction crews have been focusing on the underground utility rough-in and backfilling of the building pad in preparation for the slab-on-grade concrete. Approximately 105 cubic yards (CY) of suitable backfill material, specifically pea gravel, has been used.

Once the underground utilities are in place, crews will add a 4-inch layer of capillary break material, consisting of 5/8-inch crushed rock, totaling 85 CY. Then they will install a vapor barrier, allowing the concrete to be poured. The slab will be 5 inches thick and will require a total of 123 CY of concrete. Once this milestone is met, crews will move on to the framing phase of the building, where you'll see the Student & Community Center take shape!
