Kayla Ngai- Class of 2019

Kayla Ngai

For Kayla Ngai (’19), the devil really is in the details. As a Public Accountant who serves clients in the technology and consumer product space at Deloitte, Kayla focuses on the details, fact checking financial reporting numbers via audits. What she loves about the work is how “no two days are the same” and that she is gaining “a good breadth of experience across different industries because of the broad spectrum of companies Deloitte serves.”

While attending the University of Southern California where she played soccer and majored in accounting, Kayla knew she wanted to go into this career path because of the economy courses she took at Overlake which gave her a “holistic view of business” and prepared her for deeper study in college.

Kayla is working toward earning her CPA, and plans to obtain that certification within the next five years which will help her shift toward a career as a financial analyst.

When Kayla isn’t busy working at Deloitte or studying for her CPA exams, she can be found back on Overlake’s campus coaching alongside her long-time coach, Sally Goodspeed. As the Girls Varsity Soccer Assistant Coach, Kayla has enjoyed seeing the game from a different perspective. “I love going from looking at a computer to looking at players and being on the field,” shares Kayla who is learning how to “break the game down and dole out bite-sized guidance to a spectrum of players of different abilities.” Kayla even still plays soccer herself in co-ed leagues a couple times a week.

Perhaps the most fascinating detail about Kayla is her quick rise to fame as a professional spike ball player. This is Kayla’s first season making pro level by accruing enough points through various games and tournaments. In fact, in October of 2024, Kayla will be competing in the Spike Ball Championship in Rock Hill, South Carolina, a tournament that also streamed live on YouTube. “I have found a lot of community in Spike Ball and even went to tournaments in Europe to play where people came up to me and knew who I was,” shares Kayla. Catch Kayla on the Overlake soccer fields or at a local Spike Ball tournament and see an Owl who is finding joy in work and play.
