Mary Javier - Class of 2018
Mary Javier’s passion for dentistry dates way back. In fact, Mary even did her senior project on exploring dentistry through a dental program in China. Currently working as a preceptor and master’s student at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health at Rochester University, Mary (’18) is still focused on oral hygiene and care. Her masters research focuses on cavities in children ages 6-8 and she is in the process of applying for an AEGD (advanced education general dentistry) program so she can earn her American license.
Mary looks back to her busy schedule at Overlake as one of the elements of her owl education that prepared her for real life. “Balancing several classes, my preceptorship, and my masters research” harkens back to her full courseload and cocurricular schedule when she was a student at Overlake. But it wasn’t all work and no play for Mary. “My favorite memory was meeting my best friend, Teya, and 10 years later, we are still best friends,” shares Mary. Mary also looks to her female role models – her advisor and female faculty who provided mentorship – as instrumental to her growth and learning then and now.
Now living in New York and busy in work and school, Mary doesn’t have a lot of free time, though she enjoys binge watching favorite shows whenever she gets the chance. And, on her coveted trips home, Mary loves having slumber parties with her bestie, Teya.
