Schoolhouse Rock Live!
Come see Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr. tonight! The 5th and 6th graders have been hard at work on this show. “Many of these kids have never been in a play,” says Arts Faculty and Director Sarah Fitzpatrick. “It’s a chance to be involved in Overlake in a different way.”
One thing Fitzpatrick has loved seeing is how the 7th and 8th graders have stepped up to be a part of the tech crew, choreograph the show, and produce behind the scenes. “Most of those students were involved with the 5th and 6th grade show when they were that age,” she notes of the full circle moment.
Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr. is an energetic, lively, colorful show that follows the story of a brand-new teacher battling first-day jitters. The nostalgic songs of Schoolhouse Rock remind him of his past and inspire him to embrace the exciting challenges and opportunities ahead.
This show also marks the final show directed by Fitzpatrick as she will be retiring at the end of this year. As she directs her last show, Fitzpatrick reflects on her time at Overlake, “I’ve always been thankful to have such a great department to work for,” she says. “I love to see the growth in the kids over time. Even if they decide not to be in a play again, they have that experience.”
Fitzpatrick joined Overlake in the fall of 1992 and was originally hired as a three-month substitute teacher. After she was offered the job she thought she might stay for a few years, but now more than 30 years later, she attributes her tenure to the people of Overlake. “I stayed because I so enjoyed the students and support of the community,” she says,
Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr. Live opens tonight at 7:30pm and Saturday at 2:30pm in the Fulton Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at showtix4u.com or at the door.
