Girls Golf takes home multiple state titles
This year's Girls Golf team came together throughout the entire season to support each other and lift each other up during all the highs and lows. State was very competitive with 5 teams competing with 3 or more players. As a whole, the team claimed the championship title for the league, district, and state. In addition to their stellar performance on the course, the team was also named State Academic Champs for 1A Girls Golf and even won the Sportsmanship award for the league.
“It was so special to witness them fight hard all the way to the end for it,” says Coach Shawn Farmer. “The weather was so challenging the first day, but everyone hung in there and kept battling.”
Freshman Kendria W. came out on day 2 of competition and within 6 holes opened up a 9-shot lead over her competitor she started the day tied with. She went on to win the League, District, and State.
A few highlights from the tournament: Sophomore Sherry F. bounced back on the second day and shot 84! Senior Sophia S. got into some trouble on the 17th hole on day two that could have easily resulted in a big number, “but instead she hit one of the greatest shots I've seen from her from about 120 yards out,” Coach Farmer says. “The pin was tucked behind a bunker and she hit it pin high, 15 ft from the deep rough. It was awesome!”
“Coach Prohn and I both feel very grateful for the opportunity to coach this amazing group, they had the most successful season of any Girls Golf Team I have ever coached, but perhaps in school history,” says Coach Farmer.
Coach Justin Prohn added, “I'm so proud of this team. They literally won everything they could. The league title, the league individual title, the bi-district team tournament, the bi-district individual title, the state team championship, the state individual championship, the academic state championship, and the league sportsmanship award. I'm not sure what else they could have conquered.” He went on to say, “but with that all said, the way this team accomplished these things is even more impressive. They truly cared for one another on and off the course. This group's cohesiveness was something I've only experienced a handful of times as a coach and those types of teams are usually the most successful. Every day it was a joy to coach this group.”
Congratulations on a great season!
