Middle School Writers Symposium 2023

The Middle School was thrilled to have Newbery-winning author Donna Barba Higuera be our Middle School Writers Symposium author for 2023! 

She presented a workshop for all 7th grade classes on "The Hero's Journey" as a way to structure stories, and students worked on developing the outline of a story of their own based on that structure. To prepare for her visit, 7th grade classes studied Ms. Higuera's Newbery-winning book, The Last Cuentista.

In addition, Ms. Higuera signed books for students at lunch, and then did a wonderful presentation for the whole Middle School. She talked a lot about what books and experiences and fandoms inspired her imagination as a kid, including Mexican folklore, and how that translated into her current writing. She also answered many questions from students.

As a thank-you gift, she is signing postcards for every Middle School student, which she will deliver later (that's a lot of postcards!). Many thanks to her for an amazing visit!
