Overlake Community Signs Construction Beam

Members of the Overlake community had the opportunity to sign their names to a piece of what will become the new Math & Sciences Center. A 15-foot beam was positioned across the Owls Nest, in the center of campus. Starting with the seniors, students had the chance to sign in green or gold pens. After the Class of 2020, both Upper School and Middle School could sign the beam during their breaks and lunches. By the time the day was over, every inch of the beam was covered with more than 600 signatures.

Beside the allure of signing a part of construction history, hot cocoa, cider, and donuts made the foggy morning more festive. "It was so wonderful to see our students, faculty, and staff come together to celebrate this exciting construction milestone!" exclaims Brisen Brady, Director of Development."As soon as the seniors started writing their names and class year, the mood was positive, fun, and uplifting. The enthusiasm was palpable! I am so glad we had this opportunity to come together and enjoy this special moment in Overlake history. Knowing that the beam will be placed alongside the Idea Lab and math and computer science classrooms, in the heart of the building, is also especially meaningful."

Later in the evening, donors who have already supported the Doors to Discovery capital campaign came together to celebrate, sign the ceremonial beam, and enjoy inspiring remarks by Science Department Chair Lisa Orenstein and Math and Computer Science Department Chair Chris Border.

"Thank you to all the families whose early and tremendous support so far has made this momentous milestone a reality," says Tanya Vail, Chair of the Doors to Discovery Capital Campaign. "The opportunities our new Math & Sciences Center will offer our students now, and for generations to come, are incredibly thrilling. I know we have much to look forward to as we join together as a community this year to raise the roof and finish the facilities of what will be an amazing Math & Sciences Center."
