Book Stacking Fun
Ready, set, stack! Pairs of Middle School students race to stack books into tall piles as fast as they can. Book stacking is a fun activity Librarian Rebecca Moore runs every year.
Originally borrowing the idea from a librarian at another school, Moore has been leading book stacking for 15 years at Overlake. The only rules are that the stack must stand on its own when completed and students can’t have more than two people stacking at a time.
“It’s energetic, associates the library with fun, and the kids love it,” Moore said. “The kids deserve some fun, they need to burn off some energy during lunch. They’ve been working hard all day!”
Students come up with different strategies as they watch their peers compete to stack in record time. Many Middle Schoolers are new to Overlake and Moore loves the team building skills they use, many of which were recently learned during their time at retreats last week.
The library staff regularly go through the catalog to take out old books that are out of date with outdated information that can’t be donated. These books are used for book stacking fun and then ultimately recycled or used for other fun projects.
