Recent Grads Descend on Campus

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

If having a half day with a fire drill wasn’t distraction enough on campus Wednesday, try having 15+ ’08 graduates on campus.  Whether they were chatting with kids or adults, they certainly brought exciting stories of college and life with them.  What a great way that Overlake is different.  Public schools do not have their graduates returning after a couple of months gone, and we had so much fun talking with them about their adventures so far.  They’ll be back in January for the Graduate Return Program.

Project Week Catalog Online Today

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Project Week choices went live this morning on the school’s Project Week section of our website.  Students can download and print out sign up forms at this website, and they need to return their selections to their advisor to be signed.  They need to have their forms to their advisor by December 2nd of next week, and those forms need to be to our Project Week Coordinator, Greg Bamford, by December 3rd.  Once all the forms are in, Greg goes through a process of assigning kids to projects.  If all goes well, kids will know where they have been placed by the holiday break.  If you have any questions, feel free to email Greg at gbamford@overlake.org or me at rburke@overlake.org.  Thanks.

Below the Surface of Parent/Teacher Conferences

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

I have attached the ability to read a selection of the book, Essential Conversations by Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot.  Noted for her work as a sociologist at Harvard University, she writes about parent/teacher conferences arguing that this conversation is paramount.  Further, she details the incredibly rich context and underlying emotional field that surrounds this reoccurring event.  As we enter into our two days of parent/teacher conferences, I thought it was interesting to post.  If you would like to read the selection, which I highly recommend, please just click on the page to your left to make it bigger on your computer.  You may need to allow pop-ups if it does not get bigger when you click on it.  Enjoy!
