Maygha (Carlotta King) I think its fun hearing the weird accents.

George: (Colonel Oliver) It’s cool.

Emma: (Judah Jenkins) I think it’s like interesting how we learn how people were back then.

Paul D.: (General Irvin McDowell) It’s Fun I guess.

Dani: (Shem Suggs) I don’t know, I guess it’s fun.

As you see it’s really fun to lots of people.

MS Volleyball Gold Team Attends First Tournament!

By SelinIMG_4218

On Saturday the 17th of October, 2009, the Middle School Gold Volleyball Team went to Bush School for our first and last tournament of the season. We all went to the Bush School about a half hour early and watched the morning division. After that, we played. We were first up against SAAS and we lost the first two games. In the third game, I got 5 serves over, then we rotated and Riley, a seventh grader, got all five of her serves over, then we rotated again and Sara got two serves over. We got 12 serves over in a row. We were supported by Mrs. O and Ms. Tantoco, who came to watch our game!

In the next game, against Cedar Park, we won. Mrs. O and Ms. Tantoco were still watching our game. They became our good luck charms.

In the last game against the Bellevue Christian Vikings, we won again. Our good luck charms had left, though. We still won. In the end, we won more games then we lost.

Chess Club Now an Option for Sixth Graders

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

By Heidi

As we start a new quarter, chess club is a new addition to the choices for sixth graders. Instead of journalism, photography, solving games, or how to gift wrap an elephant you can do chess club. If you join, go to Mrs. Boyack’s room in the Humanities Building during club time on C and H days. Grades 5-8 can join. They’ll participate in the middle school chess league tournaments, and their first is on November 13.

The Boys' Soccer Season Ends

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

By Paul D

As the short soccer season ends the teams play their final games up against our rival teams. Paul D (Me!) is moving positions on the field, he was the team captain and starting goalie, he is now playing in the action and Grey is playing goalie. “Paul is a great goalie and all, but I want Grey to earn his wings,” Coach Price said at the end of season party.

Cooper is moving from his position in the defense line to the attack line. “Cooper hasa great kick to move the ball up field, and I want to use that to score,” Price explained. The final change is moving Aneesh from his position as a goalie to the defense line, “Wow, Aneesh is a great and aggressive player,” Coach said on the sidelines.

The games we have been playing have been pretty even. We lost a game against S.A.A.S. (Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences), the final score was 4-3. Then we played Northwest and won 6-2. After that we played Bear Creek and lost 1-7. Our second to last game was against Northwest and we won 6-0. Finally after a long and hard season we played our final game against U-Prep; we won 7-1.

George scored 4 out of the 7 goals, and George kicked a perfect corner kick to Sheldon to head-butt in but it came just inches away from going in. “I don’t care if it didn’t make it in, it was the best shot of the game,” Coach Price said.
After the game coach gave us all certificates and thanks for being a good team. All and all it was a great season and I hope I have Coach Price for lacrosse!

New Field Trip..Coming up!

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

By Henna

Hey 6th Grade, another awesome field trip is on the way! On October 29th we all will be going to the Woodland Park Zoo! While we’re at the zoo, we will be using our knowledge about animals that we learned in science class. We will be acting as scientists, observing and recording observations about the animals at the zoo!

The fun starts when we leave Overlake around 8:30 am, and ends when we return around 1pm. We will all still have P.E. and World Languages class that afternoon, so don’t forget to do your homework!

We’re going to need to bring a bag lunch to the zoo, and during the field trip we will be walking around the zoo so we should dress appropriately for the weather. Our class will be going even if it is cold or raining. The field trip will cost around $12 per student for transportation and zoo admission, so our student accounts will be charged.

Just to let you know, the 6th grade teachers and parents will be accompanying the students to the zoo. An email will be sent to the parents with this information, along with requests if any of the parents are interested in chaperoning.

Drama Class in Sixth Grade Focused on Shakespeare

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

By: Miranda

The sixth graders in drama are having a great time. Our teacher Bill is telling some very famous Shakespeare stories. The ones that he has already told us were Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and now he is starting to tell the story of Macbeth. It is a very scary, thrilling, and intresting story. Being in the theatre is so much fun! Bill is also such a nice teacher! Some of the people in drama said:

Anastasia: Bill makes all of the stories scary and he always makes them really cool!

Delaney: It’s very fun and intresting and you get to learn a lot.

Sophie: I like all of the action!

The sixth grade went to the Cedar River Watershed for service day on Thursday, October 8th. We first dug out these plants called Evergreen Blackberry Bushes. Then we had some lunch on tree stumps and mud near the Rattlesnake Lake. After we had the biggest root contest which Ms. Otis won, we dug some holes and put various plants in them, like Snowberry or Tall Oregon Grape. Then we went home. IMG_0805

Science Class Finishes Forensics Unit

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

IMG_9360By Heidi

In science we recently finished our forensic science test about fingerprints, hair and fiber, chromatography, handwriting, and powders. We did labs in our notebooks and learned about these subjects. In our labs we did purpose questions, charts, diagrams, pictures and graphs, and our analysis questions. In each lab we had a different partner and ran tests together. Our new subject in science is animals. We’ll be going on a field trip to the Woodland Park Zoo. In our new lab we’ll be observing our behavior. For a reminder, in class Ms. Tantoco would like you to bring your animal textbook to our next few classes.IMG_9348
