Work continues inside and outside the new TLC

March 1st, 2010

Crews are doing lots of work inside the new TLC, including painting and installing ceiling tile, and the lightweight concrete slab will be poured at the beginning of the week, project manager Liz LeRoy reports. They’re also installing mechanical ductwork and electrical work throughout and coordinating boiler delivery. They’ve begun scheduling the commissioning/starting up of the mechanical equipment.

The exterior stucco work is finished, the horizontal siding is almost done and the building’s red color now shows. As you can see in the picture the solar panels have been installed on the roof, but they’re not yet connected to power. Workers will transfer over the electrical transformer on March 18, but it won’t interrupt service since all of the new work is already done.

They’ll finish the siding and the painting at the end of the week, and take down the scaffolding soon after, when the contractor may begin the fine grading around the building.

Save the Date – 1st annual Flight of the Owls Run & Walk

March 1st, 2010

The OWLS project has been completed and now it’s time to take advantage of this new addition to the campus. Join us on Saturday, May 8, and travel the trails either as part of the 5K Run or Walk!

The event is open to all members of the Overlake community, past and present, young and old, fast and…not as fast.

Not only will you have the chance to soar around the campus, but the beneficiary of a portion of the application fee will be our Global Service Program. Currently we are supporting schools in Cambodia and Uruguay, and the money raised from this year’s race will be used to continue support of these projects.

Teacher spotlight: Micah Orr

February 2nd, 2010

By Michelle Dutro ‘10

For The Overlake Independent Student Newspaper

As a new language teacher at Overtake this year, Micah Orr is well known by many students. Here’s 13 things you don’t know about Micah…

What color is your umbrella? I’m from Seattle. I don’t have an umbrella.

Who was your favorite cartoon character growing up? And now? Growing up, I liked Fog- horn Leghorn from Looney Tunes. I’d say I still do.

If you could travel back in time to what time period would you travel? 1905, Tangier; 1931, Spain; 1940, Paris

Given the chance, what would be your first question to someone living in Antarctica? Why are you so anti-Arctic? You have a problem with us northerners

Middle school or upper school? USFTW (upper school for the win)

What is your favorite language? Unfair question. I enjoy the poetic nature of Spanish, the musicality of French, the strength of Berber and the flexibility of English. But if I’m in an argument, I like to use a little Italian.

What do you think is your worst habit? Buying expensive shoes. I have no self-control around fine leather.

If I were to look inside your refrigerator, what would I find? Good food I hope. I go shopping every day and usually cook fresh meals with whatever looks good that evening. Lots of fresh vegetables and seafood, plus a roast chicken every Sunday. I use lots of spices, like thyme, saffron, ginger, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, and others… I like to cook all sorts of things, but most of the food I make is based on Mediterranean cuisine.

Who is your favorite author and why? In English, Faulkner for his literature and Twain for his social commentary. In French, Emile Zola and Albert Camus. In Spanish, Miguel de Unamuno and the poetry of Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, Federico Garcia Lorca, Cesar Vallejo and Luis Garcia Montero. For all of them, because of who they wrote for.

What kind of music do you like? Old standards, early 90’s hip-hop, 70’s soft rock, flamenco, Rai Serge Gainsbourg, Ahwash and pretty much anything from the Caribbean.

Which video games did you play growing up? I used to go to the 7-11 and just dump quarters into the arcade version of 10-Yard Fight. When we got the first Nintendo, my brothers and I battled on Double Dribble. I would make it rain ALL DAY from downtown. And I have yet to find anyone who can hang with I me in Madden ‘05, not even Curtis Yokoyama’13.

What brought you to Overlake? A fortunate blend of preparation meeting opportunity. And I’m very happy to be here.

Do you like Tom or Jerry? Why? Might have to go with Jerry on this one. He’s clever, he’s got mad SKILLZ, and he’s pretty strong for his size. I saw him bench press an anvil one time. Kinda like… someone I know…

Construction update

December 7th, 2009

TLCTechnology Language Center Project Manager Liz LeRoy reports that crews will continue to install metal wall framing for the next couple of weeks, concentrating on the main floor now and the upper floor next week. They will receive the hollow metal door frames this week.

Fire, water lines and utility hookups are not quite complete, and workers continue to rough in the plumbing and electrical and have begun to work on the fire sprinklers.

Finally, the contractor will start to set the scaffolding for the building during the week of Dec. 7. They use the scaffolding to help install the exterior sheathing and siding. The metal roof is to be installed in a week.

Boys soccer team has first undefeated season!

November 10th, 2009

The boys soccer team won the game against Bush 4-0, and has now earned the Emerald City League Championship and the first undefeated season in Overlake boys soccer history. Last year, the team lost only one game at home.

The game was the final home game for Devon and senior teammates Sky Tweedie-Yates, Trevor Partington, Hakan Yagiz, Greg Safadago, Scout Tweedie-Yates, John Stolarczuk, Chap Grubb, Conor Crowley, Andrew Cunningham and Chris Faulkner.

Coach Bob Bristol calls this team “one of the strongest soccer classes to ever come through Overlake, and they play a brand of soccer that is extremely competitive and also fun to watch.”

On Tuesday, Nov. 10, the boys will travel to Sammamish High School to play in the district semi-finals. They play at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Cedar Park-University Prep matchup.
